Lamaze offers a workshop which allows one to call themselves a "Breastfeeding Support Specialist" but not a lactation consultant. And there are people who take the NCC breastfeeding exam or another credentialing agencies exams or even an online class and the post test - and then call themselves lactation consultants. I think that’s why the R in RLC has become necessary - while anyone can call themselves a an LC - not everyone can call themselves an RLC, although I don't know who would really enforce it if someone did decide to use the credential. For nurses, the use of credentials is enforced by the state board of nursing - but there is no state board regulating LC's that I know of. I understand this is a short course one can take and receive this title much like the other groups credentialling for CLC, CBE... Thanks for any information.
