Someone wrote: Ladies and Gentlemen- Received and inquiry from a birth professional. What steps should a mother take when a representative from the hospital informs her that her premature infant was given another baby's milk? Her OB has checked the chart of the mother who provided the milk and has told the mother of preemie that she has a clean medical record. To date she has been told the following: Attain an attorney Contact the local Health Dept. Are there any other steps to be taken? She has been told that chances are overwhelming that her baby is fine; but understandably, she is very nervous. Response from me: I would say that it depends on whether her preemie was otherwise getting HER milk, or getting formula. If her baby was getting formula, then she should send the other mother a big bouquet of flowers and tell her THANK YOU. And then she should start providing her own milk for her baby. If she is already providing her own milk for her baby, then she can send the other mother a smaller bouquet of flowers and tell her THANK YOU, and offer to provide an equivalent amount of her own milk for the other baby, to replace that which her baby used instead. I suppose she might ask the other mother to be tested for HIV, if it would put her mind at ease. Forget the doctor though, and the local health department is likely to think that formula would have been better, so . . . .
