Mary Kay stated in her post, "I've even had moms "ask for the LC" and then totally challenge or refute the advice or information I give them. If someone can tell us how to address this, and do it in the name of "good customer service" let's talk about it." This thread is a familar one for me as well and when you posted on it again, Mary Kay, it brought to mind what a few moms have said about the film I give my BF class moms to take home and view. It's Chloe Fishers, "Coping With the First Week" and in it a mom is being helped with latch, totally hands-off helping, and she has to repeat latching several times. Moms have come back to class and said it is a great film but they hated the part where mom is "made" to keep trying with latch. I learned to point out after the first time I heard this that yes, it's hard to be told you're not doing something right, but the midwife is only trying to prevent future problems. I also remind them that the baby in the film doesn't even feed until correctly latched. I would guess these particular moms who object to this practice of latching see it as criticism and would need lots of TLC and acknowledgement of their frustation and even, anger, about working on latching. It's interesting to me how frequently moms and moms-to-be aren't/don't think about baby and the effect of things on him, but are so caught up in themselves. These are the moms that need lots of stroking and ego building, I think, and I often mentally have to remind myself not to get miffed with what often seems like childish/narcisstic behavior.
