When parents ask, "Isn't breastfeeding supposed to come 'naturally'", I
reply, "very little about birth is natural, so why would we expect
breastfeeding to be? We use epidurals, narcotics, vacuum extractors,
forceps and cesareans to get babies out. We rub away amniotic fluid
and vernix, bathe them, seperate them from their mother, put clothes
and blankets on them. Good grief! this is all before we contaminate
their gut with formula. Why on earth would we expect babies to know
what to do! we do everything we can to derail them.

My new slogan is "Breastfeed early, breastfeed often."

I just know not all of those nurses are hopeless.
