Hi all, I've been nomail for ages, so let me reintroduce myself: I'm a women's health educator and lactation consultant for two hospitals here in St. Louis, as well as having a private practice as a professional speaker/presenter/humorist. I'm also married (23 years!) with 2 sons, 18 & 14, both of whom were bf > 1 1/2 years. I recently was elected to Lamaze International's Board of Directors, and hope to represent the professional breastfeeding community through my involvement with the childbirth arena. Here is the letter I just sent to the NY Times, reacting to their article. Feel free to let me know what you think! Will also be sending notes off to DHHS, & my legislators, as well as local media, as soon as I can get my "stuff" together. Glad to be back on Lactnet! Dec 4 article "Breastfeeding Ads Delayed by a Dispute Over Content" To the Editor: (Re. Dec 4 article "Breastfeeding Ads Delayed by a Dispute Over Content"): Why, exactly, is the simple truth about breastfeeding a topic of controversy? There is no doubt whatsoever in the pediatric community that breastfeeding is not just the best but the only truly healthy method of feeding infants. Depicting honestly the potential hazards of resorting to other, inferior methods is no more a cause for concern than depicting honestly the hazards of not wearing seatbelts-except, perhaps, that there was no well-funded lobby against seatbelts, as there is with formula manufacturers who have a vested financial interest in keeping babies on the bottle, whatever their cries to the contrary.
