In response to Nikki's post re: formula fortification as found in Dr. Joseph Mercola's website. A little clarification is in order here. I came away with a completely different view than Nikki after reading his information, but it's probably because I know him. Dr. Mercola lives and practices in the NW suburbs of Chicago, IL and is highly respected in both mainstream and alternative local medical circles. Several respected LC's who also live and practice in the area are patients of his as well as their families. He is extremely supportive of breastfeeding and holistic health. As an example (I have permission to post), a very dear longtime friend and colleague of mine lost her husband to stomach cancer 1 year ago 3 months after diagnosis. His last weeks were eased when he could no longer tolerate solid foods by drinking human milk provided by a mutual friend (and LC) who was still nursing her last baby. Dr. Mercola (his physician) enthusiastically supported the idea as did his practice partners. I was actually glad to see the information on fortifying commercial infant formulas on his website. We all know that it will probably take at least another generation for formula to "go away" and until that happens, at least mothers who are formula feeding for whatever reason have the option to make formula "better" for their babies. Dr. Mercola enjoys great success in helping people find better health thru diet. I don't fault him for attempting to better the health of babies who are not being fed mother's milk.
