> Too bad popular magazines don't have the same ethical standards as > professional journals. Who knows how they choose their columnists! > > Naomi Bar-Yam I ve wondered the same thing as Naomi and have done a little web searching using media expert as search words. Apparently many journalists depend on people who put themselves out there as experts. There are web-sites that are basically lists of experts in various fields. Many are authors with a book to sell. If there is money to be made, a public relations person can be hired to help promote themselves and their book. Many of us who are legitimately experts could very well learn to promote ourselves as such. There is free information on how to do this. Public Relations person Annie Jennings advertises her services with a free list of ways to make yourself a media expert. Search the LACTNET archives for media expert, July 23, 2003, Item #130899, or--better yet--visit her website at www.anniejenningspr.com where she offers a good deal of free stuff. Another source of free info is Mediaworks Notebook at www.mediaworks.com. From reading the material on I find in these searches, I sense that most journalists are trying to do a good job according to their training. However, if we don t tell them what we know and how to reach us, who will? Then we must be prepared to communicate effectively. Many of us have used LACTNET to work out letters we send. An archival search for letters should locate examples of well written presentations. A web search for journalism, interviewing brings up sites, such as www.journalism.org that could help one learn what journalists look for. Preparing for radio would probably require practicing with a tape recorder and for TV with home video if professional training is too expensive. If we only complain, we re just cursing the darkness.
