The use of sugar water now in painful procedures has been initiated as they
have found that the sugar water helps to decrease pain in neonates. I
would think that if the parents don't want sugar water they should ask for
a penile block, emla cream, sweeteze (high concentrated sugar water that
can be dipped on pacifier/finger). I agree that it is frustrating to watch
babies being given sugar water with no explanation why or what for,
especially while a mother is trying to learn to breastfeed. But at least
the medical profession is finally acknowledging that infants do have pain!
I would just ask for another alternative to the use of sugar water via
bottle to help with pain.
