In the interest of providing a pick-me-up, I thought I'd give an update on a set of twins I asked for help with a month ago. These little guys were born at 36 weeks, and were discordant, with birth weights of 4 lbs 10 oz and 6 lbs 5 oz. Since birth, they have received nothing but breastmilk, and almost exclusively from the breast, although mom let dad give a few bottles of EBM in the last week. At 1 month of age, the little one weighed 6 lbs 8 oz, and the bigger one 8 lbs 4 oz. In the 27 days since hospital discharge (which was the lowest wt. recorded for each baby) the smaller one has gained 37 oz, and the larger one 41 oz. Well over an ounce a day for each baby! Mom's milk alone has grown nearly 5 lbs of baby in just under 4 weeks. This mom has become adept at nursing one or two at a time, and is feeling confident and content with her nursing relationship so far. I enjoy working with them so much I almost wish I could come up with excuses to see them more often! Sometimes nothing bolsters my enthusiasm for working with nursing moms so much as the sight of a content and happy baby (or two) and mom.
