Last week in Roanoke, VA we had the pleasure of listening to presentations by Susan Ludington CNM, PhD, FAAN who is now at Case Western Reserve. She described research that showed breast bio-synchrony. (Although she handed out a 52 page review of kangaroo care literature, this citation was not in it.)

Twins were studied while kangaroo care was taking place simultaneously. It was determined that breasts respond differentially to the temperatures of the individual infants rather than similarly as measured by skin temperature. As if that were not enough, when twin 1 was removed and twin 2 was placed on twin 1's breast, that breast also adjusted to twin 2 as needed. And amazingly, when twin 2 reached out to touch the unused breast, it immediately stopped fluttering cycles (as if trying to find a baby to heat!) and adjusted to twin 2's temp. After many years as a lactation consultant, I still never cease to be amazed at how wonderfully we are created and as Dr. Klaus states "How much do we not know.."
