Last night (March 12) CTV (Canadian national TV network) News featured: "CTV News Success Story: A circle of friends pitches in to help lift a sick mother and her baby out of dire straits" It highlights an Edmonton mom whose baby received private milk donations from 12 friends, while undergoing 6 weeks hospitalization and treatment for a potentially fatal blood disorder. "She received transfusions and drugs that made breastfeeding impossible" The story was done by the local Edmonton station, after a local mom contacted them to correct information, and provide more information, following the national story on "Milk Banks becoming a thing of the past" that was run on CTV news on Feb 24. http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/1046059177826_97/?hub=Sp ecials If you missed the item last night, you can view the complete video at: (scroll to the bottom of the page - its the last story featured) http://www.ctv.ca/generic/generated/news/CTVNewsAt11.html There is no written transcript on the site. Unfortunately, the item last night did not mention milk banks AT ALL. They did show a nurse who cautioned against sharing milk due to the risks of spreading disease, and the "given the safety of artificial baby formulas, the risks are pretty high". Also, there was no mention at all of medical/health reasons to breastfeed, just the moms insistance that breastmilk comforted her daughter and that there was a huge emotional difference (between when the daughter drank breastmilk and formula). The reporter concluded with comments about the "extraordinary friends" and that "both mother and daughter are grateful for the precious gift".
