I have two other links, both from 1999. This one does not use the term "general Anesthesia" http://anesthesia.stanford.edu/kentgarman/clinical/NPO.htm This one does, but the date is older than the 2002 linkI sent before... http://www.asahq.org/publicationsAndServices/NPO.pdf Years ago when I was researching this, I came across studies that indicated human milk and clear liquid could have a npo of 2 hours or 4 hours, depending upon the study. 6 hours was recomended for non-human milk and solid foods. I negotiated with the hospital and we agreed to a NPO of 3 hours. I think most babies older than a few months could handle a npo of 3-4 hours, without a problem. My nearly 8 year old will be having surgery this month, and I'm sure I'll have a conference with the hopsital and negotiate this and other "procedures."
