Hi, all...

I'm under the gun, and I'm tired of trying to reinvent the wheel.

I've been trying to write a "breastfeeding preemies" policy for our NICU for
months now. I get a piece done here, a bit there, and then I have to go help
a patient. I work as an L&D nurse, too, so lactation seems to always take a
back seat. And besides that, I really don't KNOW that much about preemies!
Our NICU limits time at breast, bcause it says that non-nutritive nuzzling
"tires baby out" and "burns too many calories". I suggested gavaging these
kids at the breast, without much success, so far.

Are there any sources for decent policies I could just peruse (and then lay
my head on a counter and sob pitifully at my own incompetence)? I don't find
anything in the archives, except a general feeling that I should go live with
Drs. Paula Meier and/or Nancy Wight and set up shrines in their honor. I'm
not really even sure how to get copies of Dr. Meier's work with preemies,
except to call Chicago.

I promise I won't copy someone else's work. I already have a decent looking
references page. I just need some direction.

Someday, I'll pass on the favor to a newer IBCLC who needs the help. (I
aspire to be a crone when I grow up.)

TIA,

Tammy in Colorado
