Sorry, I know I'm chiming in a little late on this whole bottle discussion, but wanted to add my two cents. I've been breastfeeding for nearly six years continuously, currently nursing my three year old. My children have never had a drop of formula, and are both, thank G-d, happy and healthy children. I never had concerns about my milk supply. I wanted to report on an unhappy side effect of using bottles. A few weeks ago, I bought a pump. Mind you, I have no real need for one, but I had a store credit lying around, no other item that I really needed, and wanted to see what all the fuss was about with the Avent Isis. So, I brought it home, put it together, sat myself down and pumped for quite a while, with massage and breathing and everything. And guess what, through no fault of the pump or my inability to read the directions, I got about 1/2 an ounce. "Half an ounce!?", I thought! How can that be? Now I know that my daughter is three (although still nursing quite a bit) and my milk supply is certainly not what it was even when she was two, but.... half an ounce? And suddenly this very confident, LLL Leader even, with two healthy breastfed children, had a completely illogical moment of self doubt. And then I realized that, all these years, I've liked not really knowing how much milk they get when they snuggle in to nurse. I don't want to be able to measure in ounces what they're taking in, anymore than I want to be able to quantify just how much they love me. So, I'm just going to go in and continue nursing, unconsciously imagining an immeasurable flow of milk, and knowing that whatever it is, it's perfect... By the way, to add insult to injury, I tried to convince my daughter to drink the pumped milk from a cup, so it wouldn't go to waste, but she would have none of it. Thanks, but no thanks, mom, That's gross.
