I had a mother ask me if I knew what effect a high protein, low/no carb diet has on breastfeeding. Her son is 2 1/2 years old. She'd been following the diet for 2-3 weeks, when her son began nursing much more frequently. At one time he told her he couldn't get any milk, and another time he cried saying he hated mama's milk. He was repeatedly latching, then pulling off crying. She wondered if this was due to the ketones. She had lost 8 lbs at the time. There was a noted decrease in the supply, so mom began eating carbs. She states she ate a bagel with cream cheese and something else. Within 12 hrs he was happily and contentedly nursing, stating that he liked the flavor and there was lots of milk. Have any of you heard of this and is there any references I could site?
