With all due respect, Patricia, I think that we are the ones not getting it--if a baby cannot breastfeed, then something is wrong. I don't think we look deeply enough for the problems for many reasons. First, we don't actually have to--it isn't "life or death" (at the moment, anyway) and the baby can always be fed something in some other way. Secondly, I think we as a profession are under-educated about oral-motor function, sensory integration and trauma. Nor are we taught solutions to many of these problems, such as clipping a tongue tie, chiropractic, cranial/sacral therapy, integrated PT and homeopathy.
