From Hale 2002: "Following topical administration to nipples (400 IU/feeding), Vit E plasma levels in breastfeeding infants were 40% higher than controls in just 6 days. Studies clearly indicate that high levels of Vit. E are stored in the liver and tend to accumulate over time...Do not apply to nipples unless concentrations are low (<50-100 IU) and then only infrequently. The application of pure vitamin E oil (1000 IU/gm) to nipples should be discouraged." Given than many people don't know how to interpret the concept of "use sparingly" or don't know what concentration they are using, I think the risks of advising Vit. E oil as a nipple lubricant far outweigh the benefits. Esp. when there are safe alternatives like olive oil or purified grades of lanolin.
