One more problem with not breastfeeding: As someone with a life-threatening latex allergy (I've spent a lot of time in the ICU for it), I always have my eyes out for infants being sensitized through pacifiers and bottle nipples: http://www.aaaai.org/aadmc/currentliterature/selectedarticles/2002archive/la tex_baby_nipple.html "...there have been occasional reports of infants becoming sensitized to latex in pacifiers. This case report from the Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC described a 2 month old infant who manifested congestion, facial rash and noisy breathing while taking a soy-based formula. The symptoms persisted despite a switch to another, non-soy formula, peaking the middle of the feeding period. Latex sensitivity was detected by in vitro testing and a silicone-based nipple free of latex was substituted in feeding this infant." too bad the baby wasn't on breastmilk I've done archive searches in the past and haven't seen much on latex. My hope is that all of you would recommend silicone over latex when artificial nipples are used for any reason.
