What I've noticed about the to rooting reflex. I'm feeding my third who is almost 10 weeks and she is starting to root less when she is wide awake. But if I put her to the breast when asleep (or almost awake) she roots frantically. It's like theirs something primevial about the rooting reflex when they are half awake or in light sleep. I'm interested to see that when the rooting reflex totally disappears in the awake state whether the 'sleepy' rooting reflex takes longer to disappear. Something else that I find interesting is that from very early on (i.e. within the first weeks) when in light sleep she will chuckle or laugh like an older child. Just like crying out in the middle of the night and not actually waking up. When she laughs while awake it is totally different. To me it's like she's already programmed to laugh as a child/adult but that this is not yet integrated into awake psyche. Going Offtopic now, but its interesting to watch. Actually, does anybody now a good source of info (or book) on child development that will include this - rooting reflex etc to keep it on topic! Sara Bernard The Netherlands (going to put a sleepy baby to the breast now and see if what I've written still holds!) *********************************************** The LACTNET mailing list is powered by L-Soft's renowned LISTSERV(R) list management software together with L-Soft's LSMTP(TM) mailer for lightning fast mail delivery.
