This new study may provide good research to combat the scheduling and "cry-it-out" type of parenting that is advocated by books and parenting programs like Babywise and Baby Whisperer. It explores how maternal response to babies' cries is hard-wired into the brain. Significantly, it also showed that some of the brain regions activated are involved in conditions such as depression and addiction.
"Without our parents taking care of us when we are young, we would not be able to survive," the researcher said.

The new study will use recorded cries of the parents' own babies, Lorberbaum said. Previously, one baby's cry was used with all subjects. Researchers also will investigate whether the responses of breast-feeding mothers differ from those of bottle-feeding mothers.
