There is no data to suggest that premies ingesting the small amount of colostrum with even smaller amounts of MgSO4 will increase their levels of Mg or delay effective renal excretion. The amount received through breastmilk, even assuming FULL breastmilk feeds (which is unlikely in a premie immediately postpartum while Mom is still on MgSO4) is tiny compared to the amount received through the placenta in utero. If the Neonatologist has some data showing a significant increase in Mg levels (or delay in decrease of Mg levels) I would like the reference.
