For many people in the breastfeeding-advocacy community, it *IS* making a
statement to insist on breastfeeding as one word, rather than hypenated or
as two words. If you compare

breast-feeding to
bottle-feeding

it make it seem as though they are both primarily 'feeding' methods,
differing only in the route of transmission of an essentially identical
product, and not differing at all in the process, as they are both simply
"feeding."

By taking the hyphen out of breastfeeding, you are de-emphasizing the word
'feeding' -- and the implication is that breastfeeding is more than just a
feeding method.
