One of my clients is on Depakote for epilepsy(diagnosed after the birth of her fourth child). Her neurologist wants to put her on trileptal, but insists she'll need to wean her 8 month-old and won't give her permission to drive her car until she changes her med. She nursed her other 3 children for one-two years each and would like to keep breastfeeding. At the same time, she wants to resume driving because she is missing a lot of her other children's activities. I have not been able to find out anything about this med in any of my breastfeeding references. Has anyone had any experience with it? This same doc did not want her to breastfeed on the depakote, but we swayed him. Interestingly, her child's pediatrician is married to her neurologist, yet we haven't been able to come up with a solution re. the trileptal because the only reference we can find is the PDR, which tends not to be breastfeeding friendly. I was able to find info on internet that trileptal can be given to children with partial seizures, but I don't know how to apply this info to a breastfed 8-month old. Any help will be VERY appreciated. You may e.mail me privately or to lactnet.
