Oh my, Pat, it sounds as if these babies went home too early. I would be
very worried about them receiving adequate nutrition if they are sleepy,
jaundiced and feeding infrequently. If they are not maintaining their
temperatures they should be in an isolette. Mom needs to pump to maintain her
milk supply, but most importantly she needs to feed these babies and keep
them warm. I would check the wt.s and their temperatures. If they are cold
they will burn fat and calories to stay warm and will not feed well. I see
this too often where 35-36 week babies are treated as if they are term--they
are prime candidates for readmission for dehydration and jaundice. Multiply
this by three with triplets and a mom recovering from a c section. Sure, mom
can do kangaroo care at home but I'm not sure she can do it for 3 babies 24
hr. per day.
This is tough situation with friends but maybe you can advise them to call
their pediatrician if babies are cold and not feeding well. At the very
least babies need to maintain temp and be feeding well to go home from the
NICU--why do we discharge them from well baby settings earlier?
