The original papers first identifying the link to autocrine control in women are: Daly SD & Hartmann PE. 1995 Infant demand and milk production (part 1) & The short term control of milk synthesis (part 2) in Lactating women. JHL 11: 21-37. Cox, DB., Owens RA & Hartmann PE. 1996. Blood and milk prolactin and the rate of milk synthesis in women. Experimental Physiology. 81. 1007-20. Daly, SE Kent JC Owens RA & Hartmann PE. 1996. Frequency and degree of milk removal and the short term control of milk synthesis. Experimental Physiology. 81 861-875. There is however a nice review of this work and others in JHL by Cregan & Hartmann 1999 Computerised breast Measurement from conception to weaning: clinical Implications. JHL 15(2) 89-96. There isn't anything really showing "a shift" from endocrine to autocrine control - its probable that they work together - with prolactin, appearing at this time from the evidence, to have a permissive role while the autocrine control is responsible for amount of milk produced. The autocrine influence appears to come into play when Lactogenesis II begins.
