I have to respond to Ann Perry's post about teaching formula feeding. This is one of my pet peeves. Why do artificial milk companies spend so much effort on teaching breastfeeding? ( Of course we all know why!!) They should really be teaching the use of their own products. This has become the theme of any conversation I have with the reps when I meet them in the hospital, or in conferences. For some reason I always end up sitting next to them!! When they see me, they always try to give me some new information on breastfeeding.....course material, etc. And my response to them is always, breastfeeding is OUR business, not yours. You should really be giving courses on bottle feeding. Mothers don't know how to prepare the stuff, and now that we have ready-made in the hospital, the nurses don't even bother to explain. Suddenly the mother finds herself in a situation that she wants to give a bottle, and who does she call? Me. Talk about the blind leading the blind!! I only prepared a bottle once in my life: when I was working with a ped, we had a real FTT baby who needed to eat immediately, and he sent me in the kitchen to prepare a bottle for her. After about 20 minutes when I still hadn't appeared, he came in to look for me, and found me trying to figure out what to do. ( the directions on the can are written ina font that I never could read even with a magnifying glass.) He couldn't believe that I had raised 3 children and had NEVER prepared a bottle, even once. When moms call me for bottle feeding help, I eventually get them back to the one way that I know to feed infants!! Think how many potential customers they lose!! If they really want moms to bottlefeed, they have to educate them how. In the hospital, while I am giving breastfeeding help, they should be giving lessons on bottlefeeding, and leave the breastfeeding mothers alone. Sterilizing utensils, making the drinking water really safe, how to hold the bottle, the baby, etc. This makes them very angry and I enjoy every minute of it!! Hehehe. Now whenever I see them, I ask......are you giving bottle feeding courses yet? You are losing customers every day!! Tsk, tsk.
