What is OAMER and how does it effect milk supply and nursing/sleeping patterns? Jodi Barnard Overactive Milk Ejection Reflex AKA Overactive LetDown also can be associated with hindmilk/foremilk imbalance if baby doesn't learn to regulate it well. > "The longest any one has nursed is only 16 mos, but that seems to be typical > of babies of OAMER....they never really learn to comfort nurse." What gives me pause regarding this statement is that MUCH more happens after 16 mo. than comfort nursing. I have known and helped many moms that have adjusted positions and used techniques to continue extended nursing for a nice long time. > > "... and he also hated to nurse at night (again because of the OAMER > which I didn't know about at the time)." > Nursing lying down should be an assistance with OAMER to slow the flow. Nursing would never be from the "top" breast, but only the one lying or near the mattress. Football hold while reclined, or baby nursing lying on top of you tummy to tummy are other possibilities. OAMER is a very manageable situation given the adjustments to "nurse uphill" and use gravity to your advantage to slow the flow. With a newborn, it's often easiest to allow baby to get initial letdown and then take baby off and release the initial gush of milk into a cloth diaper, and then proceed with nursing. Just some thoughts.
