I had no response r/t syrup of ipecac, so I was waiting to hear from
others.

However, as a League Leader we had a mom come to one of our meetings who
was anorexic. She even used mustard instead of butter on the small amount
of bread she ate! Her baby was not gaining adequately, probably because
she had ZERO fat in her diet...and very few calories of any kind. She
wanted to be back in her very thin weight by 6 weeks postpartum. My
co-leader was a registered dietitian. We spent some time with her after
our meeting, and finally agreed that breastfeeding was not adequate for
this baby, who was not back to birth weight at 4 weeks - and looked like
his skin was hanging from his frame. Scared us to death!

We kept in close contact with the mom after the meeting, and offered her
support in using SNS with formula (no milk banks nearby at the time). She
quit breastfeeding, and frankly we were relieved. She needed much more
help than we could offer and her baby had no time for her to deal with her
problems.
