Cleft of Soft- Roberta, I think your info was well put. We have worked with several with clefts. Cleft of the soft can't be treated with an appliance and usually moms have a difficult time with infant being able to hold enough negative pressure to remove milk. We are still working with a mom whos baby is 6 months, sounds just like your situation. Baby removes milk well on one breast ( possibly because cleft is on opposite side) and other side has great difficulty. We recommended positioning on other breast by switching babies position to keep cleft side up. She still needs to pump to keep supply up because baby doesn't empty well enough to keep supply and she supl with EBM a couple times a day. Slow to gain at first, but doing fine now. Her other child had a cleft of the soft also and is 3 and on his 3rd set of tubes because of ear infections. If trying to keep baby at the breast, pump and supl. is too much for some moms, I think it is vital to stress the importance of why they need the benefits of getting the breastmilk, however they get it.
