Hello to all. I am an on-call lactation specialist at a small, rural hospital and am looking for any copies of newborn standing orders from other facilities that reflect a more "watch the baby" approach to infant feedings after birth. I have already looked through the archives and found lots of helpful information on feeds during the first 24 hours, but nothing about example standing orders. Our perinatal committee (composed of all of our OB nurses, OB docs, pediatricians and myself)is meeting next Wednesday to discuss revamping our very outdated Newborn Physician Standing Orders, which currently state the following: " First feeding (breast/bottle) within one hour of birth and not to exceed every four hours thereafter." The staff has been interpreting this to mean that they need to either force breastfeeding or supplement the babies with formula if they don't meet these criteria. Most of them know the full-term babies are best when left to their own schedules but they don't want to go against hospital orders. Any information from any of you in this regard would be so helpful and appreciated! You can email me privately at [log in to unmask] if you have information on file, or to request my mailing address.
