In verse (sura) 2 which explains in great detail conduct in terms of family
relations in many different contexts (including divorce) there is a subverse
#233 that talks about mothers giving the baby the breast for two whole
years, if there is desire to complete the term etc etc. It is a guideline,
not only for those who are in the process of divorce, but as a general
principle that many muslims are aware of. Like any person of any another
faith, a muslim might not know the koran in all its detail and I would
suggest that one refer the muslim to the verse 2:233, to read it with
reflection. It is somehow an earlier version of the Innocenti declaration
".....up to two years or beyond". I would also interpret it as a minimum.
As a mother (and muslim), I was very encouraged by the fact that the Koran
gives a guideline in this very important matter.
