>anyway, all that to ask -- in our combined years of lactation experience, >have any of you ever come across a mom who is coercing an older child to >continue nursing for her own gratification? I'm not talking about continuing >to try and nurse a reluctant 9 month old, or 12 or 15 month old -- I'm >talking about coercing -- with a "mommy won't love you" or whatever -- a 4 or >5 year old child -- to continue? Not been officially (and educated) counseling that long but I have a great friend who has an older nursing child. In her situation where she has 2 kids, the younger one nurses less frequently than the older one. I can't imagine any mother who would gladly nurse an older child without encouraging them in some way to wean. And at the same time I can't see coercing an older child to nurse.... I have a child almost 4, I can't get him to pick up his toys let alone nurse! While I am sure coercion occurs I am trying to see how it would happen short of threatening this child, and there hasn't been anything in the media about just how this mom "forced" herself on her child.
