I attended Susan Boekel's excellent presentation on Gastroesophageal Reflux
at the 2000 ILCA conference. She suggests one positive use for pacifiers:
babies suffering from painful GER may need to do some "extra swallowing," to
help keep the refluxate (sp?) down in their tummies. She hastened to add
that sucking on a parent's finger would serve the same purpose ... but the
idea is that some babies with GER need to be doing more swallowing, and less
feeding.
