I'm a mother of twin girls that are now 27 months and still nursing, so here is my imput on nursing twins. I had planned to nurse them simultaneously, but soon realized that the sore nipples were too high a price. For a good three months they were nursed seperately. They were demand fed day and night. During the day, I prayed that I would have help, and during the night, I had one next to me in bed and one in the co-sleeper. They switched positions 5-6 times per night, my sleep was very interupted but adequate. They didn't start sleeping through the night until about a year of age. During this time I experienced 6-8 bouts of mastitis, and by their 9 month birthday was suffering from exhaustion. I have mothered and nursed them as I did my first, I don't regret it. They have never had a drop of formula, have grown remarkably well, and will probably nurse until they're three or older. Twins are a wonderful blessing but they are two, and the price is higher. I didn't suffer from exhaustion or repeated mastitis with my singleton...its just easier to have them one at a time. You don't have to compromise your standards of parenting to raise twins but you may age a bit quicker!
