Ingrid Welcome to lactnet and congratulations on being an ibclc pioneer in Spain. You posted your case very nicely and it is an interesting case study. I'm converting your numbers to non-metric and I get that the 5.5 mo old is about 20 lbs [9 kg]. Taken alone, I don't think this is so outside of the usual. However... the baby does not seem well. Nursing all the time (can be normal) but sounds like something new, up all nite, spitting up - maybe the baby has reflux that he is nursing alot to soothe and this becomes a vicious cycle. This can put on weight "unnaturally" and I use this term loosely. There are many excellent posts in our archives on reflux. Also stuffy nose and cough since 2.5 mos, or having a cold for many months is very abnormal to me. Could be allergy or some other problem. Again, lots of posts on this in our archives and how discomfort and itchy palate etc can cause baby to nurse excessively. I would recommned baby be evaluated by a pediatrician or like health care provider, but don't stop or even limit the bf. yes i agree babies should self-regulate under normal circumstances. Hope this helps you out some. Laurie Wheeler, RN, MN, IBCLC Violet Louisiana, s.e.
