Colic is defined in the dictionary as a sharp stabbing pain in the abdomen. Most babies go through crying spells between 3 weeks and 3 months approximately. It is usually around dinner time. Breast or formula. They can't all have sharp stabbing pains in the abdomen, especially when sometimes they stop suddenly and get happy when you start walking around with them in a front pak. It's inconsolable screaming, stiffening of the body, turning red, scaring the heck out of the parents. They call the ped and he tells them to go get simethicone drops, which about 50% of the moms say worked somewhat. One of my clients from a few years ago had a brother who was a pediatrician who knew of a study in process about this. One of the preliminary results they had observed is that it is less of a problem the nearer the equator the baby lives. Go figure. I have a handout of suggestions to help parents deal with the crying spells, if anyone wants a copy for something to say to the parents, I will be happy to mail it to you.
