I had a similar experience with a Mom who cup fed her daughter for 8 wks, tried at breast for 10-20 mins with every fd. but babe couldn't latch d/t recessed chin. She finally successfully latched the baby AND con't to brfd from that point on. I too believe the answer lay in keeping the supply up and maybe, a little, in the suck deprivation afforded by the cup fdng. Believe me, at many times I worried that this suck deprivation might alter her ability to suck at all but my doubts were alleviated when I watched this baby successfully latch and take 4 ounces in no time with a beautiful rhythmic suckle! As suggested in your post above, I too thought of switching the feeding method, mostly because of my worry re; the lack of sucking but Mom chose not to. I would, however have been worried about changing to a bottle at any point, just a little too risky in my eyes and confusing to the Mom after all that effort to avoid one-don't you think? I'm curious to know if there are other LCs out there who have used an alternate method, longer term-as above, and successfully switched to the breast. My guess would be that there aren't too many Moms that would be willing to trust as much or endure as much. Interestingly, cup fdng became quickly very easy for these 2-just before switching to the breast, she was taking 3ozs in about 10 minutes via a med cup!
