Dear Jenette,

Medication for GER is only indicated if the infant is actually losing weight or not gaining well. Spitting up by itself is not an indication to treat. According to my charts, this baby seems to have perfectly adequate weight gain for an infant although it is hard to tell without actually seeing the infant. There may be something else concerning the doctor.

Reglan has as a side effect something called a "dystonic reaction" which can result in inconsolable crying and arching. Dystonic reactions are much more common in childen than in adults. They are not allergic reactions but they are very odd.
Reglan is also a prokinetic agent and is not a great drug for delayed gastric emptying and GER. It sounds as though it may be causing more trouble than it is fixing.
