I have a question for the experts.........Mom of preterm infant (28 weeks gestation) is pumping milk for babies feedings. Baby has been doing well with feedings but milk was cultured...per Neonatologist. Culture of milk had moderate growth of staph epi. Mother is using electric pump and was instructed on handwashing, cleaning and sterilizing equipt, etc. Neonatologist started feeding baby with formula and repeat culture of milk showed the same...mod growth staph epi. The baby is not septic and tolerating feedings of breastmilk. Mother is very upset....only thing she feels she can do for her baby at this point...and then we use formula!!!! Help!!!! Mother is ready to give up and can we blame her!!!! I would appreciate any information to provide to the Neonatologist. Thanks!
