Had a mom come into the office today as a non-breastfeeder. She had come in last week to obtain a breast pump to use as she was going to be induced as she was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I don't usually give out pumps before 4 wks. postpartum. Found out she had tried br. fding but got so frustrated by all the advise she received. All conflicting she stated. "hold the breast" "don't hold it so tight" She had constant pain. Was told she could buy a special cream for that. She's a larger cup size and she had trouble keeping nipple in the infant's mouth. the baby was quite colicky.(Mom drank 4 or more cups bovine milk daily) The baby developed a rash all over the face right after she finally changed over to bovine milk formula. She brought the pump back unopened. During her hr. in my office the baby displayed hunger cues, then crying. (the forty-plus yo, 1st time mom had no formula with her.)(no teen ager!) Well those of you who know me know what I did. My pillow came out from under my desk, I rolled up the infant's blanket & caught it under mom's breast (no need to hold up breast) tickled the bottom lip, had mom hand express a few drops, showed mom with breast model why her squeezing the lactiferous sinuses blocks the flow of milk. Mom left office with Peer counselor #, mine if she needs it, and with instructions to make pancakes for herself with a non-bovine you-know-what. She likes the idea of helping her daughter have less risk of developing the asthma she suffers with. We could have lost this one but haven't so far. This is how we usually lose them, though. Nothing overly complicated. Not enough time usually to correct something that didn't get taught before leaving hospital.
