I was pregnant for more than 42 weeks with three of my four children. The fourth shocked all of us by being born two weeks before my "due date"!!! My sister also has four children, and she was about 42 weeks with the first three. With the fourth, her doctor induced her at 40 weeks. This fourth baby was the only one who had trouble breastfeeding - had difficulty latching on, uncoordinated sucking, etc. My sister felt she was just not really ready to be born. My mother tells us that she also carried each of her babies for 42 or 43 weeks (despite trying all the midwives' remedies - castor oil, herbs, etc.). I think it is frequently a family trait. I have another friend who consistently (she has six children) went 44 weeks with each baby. They even tried to induce labour with pitocin with the last two, but when nothing happened she just went home and insisted on waiting. She was absolutely certain of the dates of conception because she used the sympto-thermal method of birth control. She just seems to take longer to make a baby.
