Mary, I will let others comment on the question of how long newborns may be allowed to go without or between feeds. However, if or when they do need supplementation, surely it would be preferable to give them the same food they would have gotten if they actally had fed -- ie, a teaspoon or so of mom's colostrum? And if the doc is one of those (many) to whom the idea of "making" the mother express and the spoon-feeding the baby seems prohibitively arcane or difficult, maybe you can use that feeling to help him/her see how interventionist the whole supplemenation schedule is anyway.
