Healthy People 2010 is the set of health goals for the US for the next ten years. There are 467 health objectives in 28 focus areas. I represented ILCA at the launch of the HP2010 in Washington, DC in January. A report of this can be found in the ILCA Globe. The web site is http://www.health.gov/healthypeople where you can obtain a copy of the available documents. The objectives are also available on a CD-ROM which is nice since the printed version is the size of two telephone books! I have gone through all 467 health objectives and prepared a document on where breastfeeding could influence or improve particular objectives. I found that approximately 10% of these objectives could be improved by increasing the rates of breastfeeding initiation, length of exclusive breastfeeding, and length of total breastfeeding. This document is available from NABA (National Alliance for Breastfeeding Advocacy). Please feel free to contact me for information on obtaining a copy. I will be presenting this information at the Yale conference on October 27. These objectives are very important since much of the health funding in the US depends on their use. The breastfeeding objective is a 75% initiation rate, a 50% continuation rate at 6 months, and a 25% rate a one year. Boy do we have a lot of work to do! Go get 'em Marie.
