Drs. Newman and Hale, A mother has asked me to request your suggestions and insight. Mother's baby 3 1/2 yrs old. She has been diagnosed with a UTI. Since she is still breastfeeding 1-2 times per day, the doctor prescribed Biaxin, 2pills per day for days. This did not work. Mother had a nasty reaction to Microbid previously. Baby had reaction (hives) to Keflex when mother took it some time ago. Mother allergic to sulfa. Mother has tried taking Echinacea to eliminate the infection with no result. She has a history of gestational diabetes and has Hashimoto's thyroiditis for which she takes 1.75 synthroid every day. The doctor, who has always been very supportive of breastfeeding, is advising Levaquine, pump and discard for 3 days. Her pharmacist tells her this drug is not usually prescribed for children under 18 years. Mother is afraid her son may wean since he nurses so infrequently. She is reluctant to give up the breastfeeding because he eats like a typical 3 yr old - hardly at all. Is there another antibiotic she could suggest to the doctor? She has read the information in Dr. Hale's book, and is worried about taking this drug. Her concern is that this is not a drug given to older children. I would appreciate any suggestions or insight you have for this mom. She sees her doctor tomorrow.
