The way it was explained to me was that the mother was told (probably
erroneously) that she could only produce sufficient milk for one child and
because in her culture boys are significantly more valued than girls the male
infant was chosen to receive his mother's life sustaining milk.  Such a sad
commentary from so many perpspectives...
