I have mom's permission to post this in hopes that she can get some answers. I have a mom with a baby that is 6 1/2 weeks old and at 4 1/2 weeks had just maintained her weight and had not regained her birth weight. Mom has six other children and has had this problem with the last two as well. She ended up having to use a supplementer and nurse and would like to completely nurse this one. Mom thinks the baby seems to sleep too much at the breast. The baby has been checked to make sure it is well hydrated and the electrolytes are alright and everything came back fine. The mom rented a pump and to pump but cannot get the baby to take the milk. She has used a dixie cup, med. spoon, dropper, a syringe and a bottle. The baby gets so upset that she ends up spitting up whatever she has taken. The baby weighed 8lbs. 4oz. at birth. The baby nurses every two hours during the day and she goes for one 3-4 hour stretch during the night and then nurses constantly the rest of the night. The mother did not have an epidural or any kind of medicine for pain during the birth. The baby has 6-7 wet, and 2-3 messy disposable diapers during the day. Mom home schools so she is very busy. As of April 10 the baby did gain an ounce, but the doctor wants mom to start supplementing. Mom e-mailed me again this morning wondering if the baby could have a poor sucking reflex that could be causing the problem. With her last baby she consulted with 2 lactation consultants and they did not know what to do. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. You can either post here or e-mail me privately.
