"The Treatment of Staphylococcus Aureus Infected Sore Nipples: A Randomized Comparative Study." by Verity Livingstone, MBBS, FCFP, IBCLC and L. Judy Stringer, MBBS, MRCGP, IBCLC, Journal of Human Lactation, 15(3), 1999. One question I had when I read this article was about the timing of the intervention. Maybe someone else can find this in the article (or ask the authors). If women attended the clinic with a cracked nipple, they had a culture taken from the nipple and the swab was sent to the local laboratory. Then it says only mothers with cracked nipples and S.aureus positive culture were eligible to enter (and were then randomised to one treatment group). So, I guess women returned to the clinic 48 hours after the first visit when results were back to be randomised for treatment? Is this how others have interpreted this? The rest of the article refers to assessment at 7 days and developing mastitis within 7 days - presumably from the time of randomisation, not the initial visit?
