To Kathy Dettwyler (and an open comment for all Lactnetters):  I
can't believe people are so insensitive as to attack you for
expressing your feelings on this!  I agree wholeheartedly that
parents need to prepare for contingencies.  Not to the extent that
all they think about is what can go wrong (I've seen some lifke
this-they can't stop worrying long enough to enjoy their children),
but enough to have back up available.  In hindsight, perhaps
"shortsighted" might have evoked less hostility than
"irresponsible", but the validity of your point remains regardless
of the terminology used. Please don't hold back on your valuable
input because of the insensitivity of some responders.
