The "Breastfeeding Answer Book", page 345 states that "A well-nourished mother should have no difficult providing for both the unborn baby and the nursing child, *if he is more than a year old*" {emphasis mine} There is no reference specifically for this statement although it makes sense to me considering that breastmilk still provides primary nutrition for many babies under a year old and that many mothers will experience a reduction in milk supply when nursing through a subsequent pregnancy. If mother's milk supply is lowered and baby is or should be getting most of his nutrition from mother's milk, it stands to reason that mother needs to pay close attention to the current baby's intake. I know that there are many mothers who nurse through pregnancy and beyond, but when the current nursling is still an infant himself, greater care needs to be paid to his nutrition.
