< Got mom in tub. Got Baby undressed and laid her on mom's chest. Baby made a beeline for the left breast, threw back her head, gaped wide and latched on like she had been watching the Mandy and Mat video all her life!! Hallelujah! Mother astounded. "She wants it. She can do it." Baby took herself off; no pain during or after feed. Left nipple normal shape. Rested a bit. Then Baby took off for the right breast, where she latched (although more shallowly....> Nikki, isn't it simply amazing to watch? And so remarkable and empowering to the parents. The mom I used it on was also an attorney, though not a sceptical one. She and her husband were willing to try it twice a day, and before a week was up, there was real progress. I noted that the bathtub wasn't deep enough for submersion of the baby while nursing anyway, and most of the contact was from water Dad was drizzling over them from a container. Of course, the mother still has to take her clothes off to avoid getting them wet, but that is a sneaky way of getting more skin to skin contact anyway! I have since been thinking of ways to make this intervention "less bothersome" and safe enough for mom to attempt without help if no one else is at home so she can perhaps do it more often until the baby is securely "bonded" to the breast. I have been wondering about mom sitting on a comfy secure chair in the shower with non-slip treads, with just a trickle of comfortably warm water drizzling on the baby and mom's tummy, or from over the shoulder opposite the side where mom is nursing. Or perhaps trickling from a hand-held shower head draped over her shoulder? Good for MER as well. If you, or anyone thinks this idea has merit and tries it, please report. That flow of water over a wide area of skin seems to awaken and refresh seemingly forgotten "preverbal body memories" buried (shallowly in the early weeks) in the baby's unconscious.
